The Diabetic Brain Podcast Series

Episode 001 - The Diabetic Brain In Alzheimer’s Disease

In this podcast I share a little of “My Story” which is the preface to the ebook,  The Diabetic Brain. Early on in my integrative health care practice I became aware that my personal health history included several well known risk factors associated with dementia.
That insight was in part the impetus for an intensive examination of the associated risk factors and pathomechanisms linked to dementia disorders and that many of these risk factors were modifiable.

Highlights

  • The difference between what is accepted as normal age associated cognitive impairment and what may represent a cognitive impairment that is a possible trajectory toward the progression to a dementia disorder.
  • The ApoE4 genetic variant as the prime genetic risk factor for late onset-Alzheimer’s disease
The term type 3 diabetes— I define what the term represents and why it is a principle theory in the research that describes the underlying mechanisms in the onset of Alzheimer’s disease.

This podcast will delve more deeply into the type 3 diabetes model of late onset-Alzheimer’s disease as a cerebral insulin resistance and how it is linked to cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.

Highlights

  • What is vascular dementia and how it is different than dementia of Alzheimer’s disease
  • The early stage of Alzheimer’s disease as it is represented in insulin dysfunction at the synapse
  • Mild Cognitive Impairment as the prodromal stage of Alzheimer’s disease
  • The use of biomarkers as a window into assessing your risk for insulin resistance and Alzheimer’s disease

Episode 003 - The Diabetic Brain In Alzheimer's Disease

This third in The Diabetic Brain Podcast series will cover the association of chronic inflammation and oxidative stress to the primary underlying mechanisms that both are causative factors and prime features associated with cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease.

Highlights

  • What is chronic inflammation and why it is a key factor in chronic degenerative diseases associated with aging and neurological disease
  • What is oxidative stress and how it is related to chronic inflammation and one’s risk for diseases associated with aging
  • Key nutrients and dietary patterns that are important anti-inflammatory and antioxidant agents for protecting our brains
